Posner described this as an impression of his maternal grandparents’ first enterprise at 202 S. Broad Street in Trenton, New Jersey. Sam and Ester came from the same village in Lithuania but met only after immigrating to the United States. Their first business was a frame shop—selling picture frames and, as Posner delighted in pointing out, bed frames as well. Furniture, toys, and other goods may also have beensold, following what he called “the old peddler’s business model of stocking anything and everything.” Posner fills the storefront accordingly, with pictures, frames, furniture, and merchandise surrounding the young couple. Posner himself was later born at this address. Sam lived to be 92. In Posner’s words, “He led a colorful life. 92 years of it.”
